The aims of the 1st EDAMBA Winter Academy are to help recent post-docs, assistant professors and lecturers, as well as doctoral students near completion of their theses, to better integrate in the academic community by understanding the emerging global research system; and, also benefit from best practices and ‘hands-on’ training with respect to doctoral supervision, across geographical and disciplinary boundaries.
The size of the academy will be limited to a group of 30-40 participants in total to facilitate in depth discussions and interactions. 25-30 junior participants are going to be selected from a broad range of Business and Management disciplines and the EDAMBA network of doctoral programmes throughout Europe. 8 members of senior faculty from a broad range of disciplines and research traditions have already confirmed their participation in the academy, for mentoring and teaching through lectures, small group and informal seminars over an intensive 5-day period.
I hope you will agree with me that we have a great deal to learn from each other, by fostering this kind of dialogue and focussing our academy at the global and European levels, rather than inward looking, say ‘training the supervisors’ programmes of any specific country. Those in the latter stages of their doctorates who will shortly move into academic careers and doctoral supervision would benefit just as much as “inexperienced” supervisors who have their doctorates and work in Business and Management Schools in Europe and beyond.
